Instant Pot Bone Broth
My biggest little woke up not feeling 100% today so we’re pulling out all the stops to kick that nonsense to the curb! Whenever our immune systems are asking for a little extra support, I add bone broth to the menu. We like to think of food as medicine, and this broth is nourishing for the body, mind + soul! I’m throwing some together in the Instant Pot and I thought I would share it with you! (FYI this is basically the only thing I make in the Instant Pot and in my opinion it’s definitely worthwhile to have one around)
Recipe
There are tons of recipes out there, but the truth is you really don’t even need one! Here’s my method:
INGREDIENTS
5 Beef bones - approx 5lbs or whatever will fit your instant pot
1 onion
2 carrots
4 stalks celery
8 cloves garlic
1 tsp salt (I’m obsessed with Redmond Real Salt these days)
1/2 tsp peppercorns
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
Any fresh herbs you’d like! Any fresh herbs you’d like! I love to use Oregano, Thyme, Basil, Parsley, and Rosemary.
DIRECTIONS
Roast bones at 350 for 30min.
Throw everything in the Instant Pot and fill to max line with water.
Cook on manual setting for 120min.
Once finished, release steam - be careful, this will be painful if your fingers get in the way! (but if they do, just apply a drop of Lavender oil to soothe the burn)
Let the broth cool, then strain out the veggies + bones.
Next use it up or store it however you’d like! I’ll make a soup, drink warm right from a mug, or keep in the fridge for adding to sauces + recipes to boost flavour and nutritional value. I’ll also freeze some if we don’t plan to use it all up over a few days.
*If you don’t have an Instant Pot you can also make this on the stop top or in a crock pot you’ll just need to cook for a much longer amount of time.
*You can always make it with chicken bones if you don't have access to or are a little intimidated by beef bones (just skip the bone roasting step)
Watch me make it on my IG reel!
Must Haves
Here are my non-negotiables when making broth:
Adding vinegar! This is important because it helps pull all of the valuable nutrients out of the bones and into the water. I use Bragg organic apple cider vinegar.
High quality bones! Get in touch with your local butcher or visit the farmers market for free range, grass fed, antibiotic free options. We get ours at Kent Farms.
Roasting bones before combining with other ingredients! This will boost flavour and help make your broth more gelatinous.
Organic ingredients! Whenever possible, choose organic.
Once you get into the habit of making this and experience the incredible health benefits you’ll wish you had started sooner! Oh, and don’t forget to reward you pup with one of the roasted bones, or drizzle a little broth on their dinner……it takes a lot of patience to smell those delicious bones cooking all day ;)
